by - April 10, 2011

The most recent trend that the fashion industry has managed to push on jewelry designers is that of vintage or antique engagement rings that look like the sort of jewelry that was worn around the turn of the previous century.  These engagement rings have been popular for a few years, mainly due to the symbolism of such jewelry.  Here is a summary of the top vintage engagement rings of 2011.

1)      Rings with prominent flower designs.  These engagement rings hail from the Edwardian period, or the 1910s, are rife with diamonds of different sizes and shapes and also feature intricate filigree designs.  They are also typically made from white gold or platinum, while yellow gold rings of this nature were not popular until the 9140s with the advent of cocktail rings.

2)      Engagement rings packed with diamonds.  These vintage engagement rings usually have a massive center stone diamonds that is in a shape that is mostly obscure today, such as the Cushion cut or one of the old diamond cuts from the mid 1600s.  The smaller diamonds that are encrusted on these rings are usually set so they make up a design of some sort, typically an Edwardian era geometric pattern.

3)      Gemstone rings.  Up until the 1940s when De Beers made it their business to make diamonds the gemstone of choice, most rings of any sort, whether engagement or wedding, featured gemstones, such as emeralds , sapphires and rubies along with semi-precious stones such as amethyst.  These vintage engagement rings are rarer than those which feature diamonds.
